Is it safe?

Medellin has made huge strides since the turbulent times of the 80s-90s. Once disconnected and discontented communities have been brought into the fold of the city by gondolas and public transit. Much of the city has taken on a cosmopolitan feel with phenomenal restaurants, bars, and night life.

Travelers should take sensible safety precautions like not flashing expensive items and drinking in moderation, but Medellin is safe and receptive to tourists. For an up to date assessment check the latest US State Department Travel Advisory.

What Are the Current Rules and Restrictions?

As of 27 May 2021, travelers seeking entry into Colombia must present:
1. Negative COVID-19 PCR Test taken within 96 hours of arrival
2. Check-Mig Registration
3. Proof of return flight within 90 days

Detailed, current updates can be found at the US Embassy Covid-19 Information Page

How do I get there?

Getting into Medellin:
Medellin's José María Córdova International Airport (MDE) boasts direct flights from Miami (MIA), Ft. Lauderdale (FLL), Orlando (MCO), and New York (JFK) and short connecting flights from Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), Atlanta (ATL), Washington DC (IAD), Toronto (YYZ), and Montreal (YUL) via Bogota (BOG).

From the Airport:
Many of our partners, like Alta Estetica offer airport pick ups, but Uber, Indriver, and taxis service the airport for between 65,000 - 90,000 COP ($18.50 - $26 USD).

Savvy travelers can save money by taking a bus from the airport to the city for 13 000 COP ($3.75 USD) per person and then catching a metered cab to their final destination for approximately 15,000 COP ($4.35 USD).

If you need any assistance or have any questions, your patient coordinator will always be available to help you.

Some cool tips you should know

01.

Getting Around is Easy

If you want to explore the city, the easiest and least expensive option is to use InDriver. InDriver allows you to offer up a bid for how much you are willing to pay to get to your destination and then drivers close by can choose to accept that price. Pro-tip: check Uber's estimated price and offer a little less.

02.

You don't need to Speak Spanish!

Medellin has a large, English speaking expat community that manages fine using basic Spanish. Hotels, clinics, and restaurants cater to an English speaking clientele. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to communicate in Spanish, SpanishDict is the best translator out there.

03.

Bundle and Save

Medellin offers low-cost, high quality procedures made all the more affordable by the low cost of living and a strong US Dollar. Bundling optical services, prescription drug purchases, and procedures will help make your trip all the more worth the visit.

04.

Check Out Parque Lleras

Parque Lleras is home to a wide array of bars, restaurants, and clubs. While the prices are a little higher than the similarly cool Calle 33 in Laureles, it is certainly worth a visit.

05.

People are very Kind in Medellin

Medellin has gotten a bad reputation from a period of drug-related violence in the past. In the nearly 30 years since, the culture in Medellin has become warm, open, and welcoming.
