Is it safe?

San Jose is a safe city visited by millions of foreign tourists every year. The Costa Rican government also provides additional security and policing in major tourist areas to ensure the safety of foreign guests.

Despite these efforts, petty crime remains a threat and this can be mitigated by sensible safety precautions like not flashing expensive items and drinking in moderation. For an up to date assessment check out the latest US State Department Travel Advisory

Some cool tips you should know

01.

Addresses

Costa Rica has a unique way of setting addresses. Rather than using numbered street addresses like the rest of the world, Costa Ricans give directions relative to a local landmark. Our partners at OG Center, for example, have an address of 200 Mts sur de la Pops, casa esquinera, 2 plantas. This translates to 200 meters south of Pops (an icecream shop), corner house, 2 trees. Google Maps is your friend.

02.

You don't need to Speak Spanish!

San José has a large, English speaking expat community that manages fine using basic Spanish. Hotels, clinics, and restaurants cater to an English speaking clientele. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to communicate in Spanish, SpanishDict is the best translator out there.

03.

Bundle and Save

San José offers low-cost, high quality procedures made all the more affordable by the low cost of living and a strong US Dollar. Bundling optical services, prescription drug purchases, and procedures will help make your trip all the more worth the visit.

04.

In the Center of it All

San José is the cosmopolitan heart of Costa Rica. Don't miss out on visiting the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum, listening to the music of the Escazu Jazz Cafe, and the exploring the beauty of the Parque la Sabana.

05.

Pura Vida

Costa Rica has a relaxed culture. You will often hear people saying "pura vida", which translates literally to pure life, and it conveys a sense of being carefree, laid back, and optimistic.
